Designing For Safety and Success in Labor & Delivery

NOVA-Suite 799, 505 West Olive Ave., Sunnyvale

Doors open at 8AM, meeting begins at 8:30AM

Jules Sherman, CEO, Maternal Life and Jules Sherman Design Group

With the recognition that medical care is often poorly provided, deficient, and excessively costly without benefit, there has been increasing scrutiny on the safety and quality of healthcare in the U.S.  Two inter-related clinical areas that are at a nascent stage in the study of patient safety are maternal and neonatal care.  As the U.S. continues to have higher maternal and neonatal mortality compared to other developed countries, there are exciting opportunities to advance the science of safety in healthcare with a multi-disciplinary approach including qualitative research, design thinking methodology, simulation, controlled trials, and implementation science. The work Jules and her colleagues have created has the potential to not only contribute to improving safety and quality for mothers and newborns, but also contribute to the general science of safety in healthcare. Jules shares her passion for this space with design students at Stanford’s d. School. Over the past 6 years she has co-designed and instructed 8 different d. School courses with LPCH clinicians about various maternal and infant healthcare issues.

Jules Sherman has been a professional product designer for over 20 years. She has worked with some of the largest consumer product retailers in the world such as Costco, Wal-Mart, Target, Limited and Lowes. In 2010, Jules was accepted on a full scholarship to attend Stanford’s Graduate Design Program, and at the same time became a new mother. At Stanford, she concentrated on learning design-thinking methodology at the d. school and pursued projects in the healthcare space. Her interest in the healthcare space started with her own difficult hospitalization when her daughter was born. She started her consultancy in June 2012, which has a focus on health and wellness products. Jules has since been working on design projects for Stanford Medical School, biotech, mobile health, personal care and PERS (personal electronic response system) industries. Her clients include: Stanford Medical School, Lansinoh Laboratories, The Clorox Company, QMedic Health, Whole Biome, Great Call, Salutron, Suning and Orlando Healthcare Foundation. In parallel, she founded Maternal Life, LLC, a company that is dedicated to improving postpartum care and infant nutrition in hospitals through user-centered product innovation. Maternal Life’s first product, “Primo-Lacto” was funded through three different grants from the New England Pediatric Device Consortium and the National Capital Consortium For Pediatric Surgical Innovation (NCC-PDI Award) and was recently acquired by Lansinoh. Lastly, Jules has been designing curriculum and co-teaching healthcare design classes with physicians at Stanford’s d. School for over 6 years.
