Topical muscle relaxant for treatment of muscle pain and spasms

Event Description:
Muscle pain and spasm are the most common problem impacting the quality of life affecting nearly 2 billion people world-wide. To date there is no FDA approved Topical Muscle Relaxant (MR). Currently available products like Diclofenac and Lidocaine work through anti-inflammatory or anesthetic mechanisms, respectively. They only treat symptoms and do not work on muscle spasms directly. Prima Innovations has developed a novel muscle relaxant in cream that works in minutes without any side effects like drowsiness or headache experienced by other oral MR. Proof of the principle has been established through many animal models, some of which will be discussed here.

Dr. Mandar Shah was a Vice President of R&D at Odin pharmaceuticals, developing generic and innovative; injectable and ophthalmic products. He recently left the company to develop topical muscle relaxant (PI-111). He is an inventor of more than 26 patents and creator of many commercial products. Most of his patents are for improving formulation stability or modifying dosage regimen (Evergreening of Drug Patents). He is a recipient of Innovation Circle Award at Pfizer Consumer Healthcare; and he played key role in winning “Most Innovative Company of The Year Award”, given by Business Week to Sentiss Pharma. Dr. Shah received his Ph.D. degree from The University of Kansas in 1991 and has had a rewarding career since then.
