Event Information
Event Topic:
Best Practices in Screening for Colorectal Cancer
Event Description:
Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and death in the U.S. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and the GI societies have revised the age to screen average-risk adults. New data support screening from age 45 to 85. Current information on the importance of screening, current methods, the complexity of the process, and newer screening tools will be discussed. The Covid-19 pandemic caused a significant reduction in CRC screening due to the fear of visiting medical facilities. Unfortunately, the reduced level of screening will result in higher levels of morbidity and mortality in the coming years. The primary care physician now has an increased responsibility to reduce the negative effects of delayed screening. Colorectal cancer is preventable and treatable if detected in its early stages. Education and increased access to screening are key challenges.
