The coronavirus pandemic has brought to the front the fundamental importance of being able to breathe. It’s possible to fast for weeks, to go without sleep for up to 11 days, without water for a few days, but it’s impossible to stop breathing for more than a few minutes. Breathing is controlled by our autonomic nervous system (ANS), and among all of our other autonomic bodily functions (heartbeats, digestion, kidneys, liver…), breathing is the only one we can also control with our minds. The center of our ANS is in the limbic system and when the first humans started to talk, they naturally had to develop the ability to control how the air moves in and out of the lungs to produce sounds at will. As a result, neural pathways developed over time connecting the cerebral cortex to the limbic system. If simply controlling breath for speech has thus resulted in building new neural pathways, could advanced breathing techniques result in deeper beneficial pathways in our brains? James Nestor has famously explored the negative evolutional consequences of mouth breathing, and the positive health benefits of nasal breathing. Patrick McKeown, a well-known breathing instructor, and the author has written extensively on a wide range of health-related topics related to breathing. Yet, very little has been published on the specific effects of advanced breathing techniques on brain structure, mental fitness, and aging. Dr. Phac Le Tuan is bringing his decades of entrepreneurial experience in high-tech software innovation, including 10 years in digital health, combined with personal research and self-experiments, to explore the potential of digital therapeutics in this exciting new field of interaction between breathing techniques, brain plasticity, and mental longevity.
