Event Topic:
Mechanical Heart Pumps in Heart Failure Patients
Event Description:
The increasing number of people with advanced heart failure in the US has led to an increasingly higher demand for mechanical heart pumps or mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices. Generally, MCS devices are designed to support a patient with advanced heart failure or acute cardiogenic shock. They can be used as a bridge to heart transplant, a bridge to decision, or a bridge to recovery. After nearly 50 years of clinical development, the field of MCS devices has advanced tremendously. Different types of durable short term and long term MCS devices are widely available for heart failure patients. More versatile smaller, rotary pumps, on both percutaneous or implantable MCS devices, are available than ever before. There are many decisions to consider for a multidisciplinary heart failure team; they must choose the right patient, at the right time and with the right pump. To achieve a successful outcome, it is essential to understand the functions of each device in order to assist patients in understanding and complying with the treatment. This presentation will explore the different types of MCS devices in the current market and their unique functions.

Speaker Information
Event Speaker:
Iris Ng, RN BSN, CCRN
Event Speaker Title:
Cardiovascular ICU nurse
Event Speaker Company:
Stanford Hospital
Event Speaker Bio:
Iris has loved tinkering with medical instruments since middle school. Her science projects showcased her interests when she attached EKG leads to monitor heart rates for her small animals and used glucometers to monitor her classmates blood glucose level. To no-ones surprise, after graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Medical Technology, she took her first career as a medical technologist working with many different medical laboratory instruments at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Later on, aiming to bridge the gap between medical technology, clinical knowledge and patient care management, Iris transitioned from medical technology to nursing after earned her nursing degree at the University of Maryland. She has spent the past twelve years as a cardiovascular ICU nurse at Stanford Hospital. Iris’s specialized her nursing experience focused on managing different platforms of mechanical circulatory support devices on acute heart failure patients to help them on their roads to recovery. Iris is passionate about handling the challenge of integrating heart device management and; advanced patient care techniques, while also providing education to patients about the treatment time frames, expectations, and outcomes. In her spare time, Iris enjoys writing reviews on movies and food in social media, blogging about her travel experiences and journaling her thoughts and big ideas.
