Exploring GLUT 5 Targeting for Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

Event Description:
Current cancer detection tools are limited in their ability to distinguish cancers from normal cells due to lack of specificity. Hence, cancer- specific agents are needed for early-stage detection and diagnosis. Distinguishing cancer types and stages can be achieved by addressing differences in their nutrient uptake, manifested as changes in the expression of facilitative sugar transporters (GLUTs). Here, I present a novel approach to target the enhanced metabolism in breast cancers with fluorescent coupled sugar mimics, ManCous - engineered for specific uptake by fructose transporter GLUT5; a transporter that is known to gain expression in various cancer types while being absent in their healthy counterparts.
