Event Information
Event Topic:
Evolution of Neurovascular Interventional Business Over the Past Two Decades
Event Description:
Detachable coil, which was pioneered to treat brain aneurysms, remained the most notable product in neuro-intervention until the early 2000s. Brain aneurysms are responsible only for less than 13% of the strokes occurring in the world. The remaining 87% are acute ischemic stroke, which occurs, when clot, often formed elsewhere in the vasculature, travels to the brain, and blocks the supply of oxygenated blood to the brain. The first product to revascularize patients with acute ischemic stroke interventionally was launched in the US in early 2000s, however, it wasn’t until 2012, when a clot retriever was cleared for sale in the US, that the acute ischemic stroke interventions begun to take off as a mainstream therapy. Since then, several clot retrieval products have entered the market that have, collectively, revolutionized the field of acute ischemic stroke. The safety and effectiveness of the treatments brought forward by these devices is remarkable. The talk will provide a background on various neurovascular diseases and cover the evolution of interventional treatments for these diseases including how they have shaped the market as it stands today.
