Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in United States, and second leading cause of death from cancer after lung cancer. Traditional screening and diagnosis involves routine PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing and highly invasive transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy post high PSA. The current protocol leaves a lot to be desired as the specificity and sensitivity of PSA and ultrasound-guided biopsies have been shown to be fairly low. MRI has been shown to be highly specific and sensitive to detect clinically significant cancers. However, MRI is considered a high-end imaging modality that is very costly, especially in the United States. The talk will focus on comparing the healthcare costs between using MRI for screening, diagnosis and targeted treatment of prostate cancer compared to current standard-of-care.
