Generative AI in Healthcare: Is this your Hemingway Moment
Bob Wachter, MD
UCSF
UCSF’s Medical Grand Rounds, Bob Wachter, chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine and author of the bestselling book, The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age, discusses healthcare’s digital evolution — beginning with the widespread introduction of electronic health records starting about 15 years ago. He’ll describe the current context that will shape the implementation of generative artificial intelligence tools (such as GPT-4 and Gemini), and analyze (as he did in a recent JAMA article) why the stage is set for true digital transformation in the next several years.
Robert M. Wachter, MD, is professor and chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine. Author of 300 articles and six books, Bob coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996. He is past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. In 2015, Modern Healthcare magazine ranked him as the most influential physician-executive in the U.S. In 2020-23, Bob’s tweets on Covid-19 were viewed more than 500 million times by 275,000 followers and served as a trusted source of information on the clinical, public health, and policy issues surrounding the pandemic.
