Event Topic:
Acute Ischemic Stroke – Advances in Diagnosis, Treatment and the Global Disparities in Access to Both
Event Description:
Stroke or “brain attack” occurs when a blood vessel inside the brain is either blocked or ruptures. Strokes are the leading cause of long term disability and the second leading cause of death globally. The estimated global cost of stroke is over US$750 billion. During an ischemic stroke, the sudden blockage in an artery will disrupt blood flow which carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Depending on which part of the brain and how much is affected, the stroke symptoms will differ. Stroke victims are struck with sudden, potentially life-long paralysis that kills over 2 million brain cells a minute and ages the brain by 3.6 years per hour. Large Vessel Occlusions (LVOs) comprise about 30-30% of all strokes and cause severe disability or death in most cases if left untreated. LVOs can be treated by an emergent minimally invasive surgery called Mechanical Thrombectomy in which a catheter is introduced into the artery in the groin (femoral artery) in order to access the artery in the brain which has been blocked by a clot. Then, with help of specialized devices called stent retrievers and/or aspirators the clot can be removed and flow is reestablished. When caught in time the effects of the stroke can be reversed. The talk will present the global stroke burden and the disparities in access to treatment, the barriers, and key efforts by clinical and industry stakeholders to change this. The latest advancements along the care pathway to improve early accurate diagnosis and treatments will be presented as well.
