Event Description:
Landmark human brain-aging studies challenge the idea of steady, inevitable deterioration. Around age 50, major molecular changes emerge in the hippocampus, including astrocyte energy dysfunction, inflammation, and weakening of the blood-brain barrier. Blood-derived monocytes then increasingly enter the brain and transform into inflammatory “Micro2” cells, replacing resident microglia—a process more pronounced in men and extending beyond the hippocampus. Intriguingly, some blood-cell mutations associated with CHIP may instead enhance amyloid clearance and reduce Alzheimer’s pathology. Together, multiomics and genome-tracking studies reveal a dynamic brain–immune axis, suggesting new strategies to prevent neuroinflammation, Alzheimer’s disease, and cognitive decline.
