Event Description:
Each year, in the US alone, 120,000 children develop painful vision disorders not correctable with glasses and 4,000 become legally blind. This is a large-scale public health problem with annual costs of over $10B. Currently used technology for disease management and screening is thirty years old, cannot image the retinas of darkly pigmented children, and has been proven to be inadequate for AI. StarShip Medical’s founders have invested over $1M to develop a generational level innovation that will, at a lower cost, profoundly revolutionize both disease management and screening while enabling the critical use of AI.

Dr. Massie, PhD, is a serial entrepreneur with an outstanding record in both Aerospace and ophthalmology. On leaving UCLA, he was recruited by a large aerospace company to lead high-tech business development in laser optics. He built his team from start-up to 42 professionals and 40% of the division’s business in optics. Leaving aerospace he began a new career in ophthalmology. On discovering that physicians treating children’s eye cancer were using colored pencil drawings, he founded a business, raised capital, built a team, and then led them to develop the first ever retinal imager for infants’ eyes; called the RetCam. He led the global acceptance of the product and sold it into 23 countries and provided the investors with a high rate of return exit. There have been 8,000 cameras sold globally.
