How can or really does our medical industry from drugs, to devices to diagnostics and then to patients impact climate change? Is it minimal? Are single-use products a savior or a killer of our environment? Well, to find out, join B2DG members and guests at our November 19th morning meeting. We’ll cover the weekly updated BIONews followed by the video

In this recorded OB/GYN Grand Rounds presentation, Kelly Wright discusses how to reduce waste in healthcare. She reviews the impact that healthcare has on waste and carbon emissions compared to other areas in the United States. Dr. Wight’s main focus is spent on identification of areas of waste and emissions and discussing actionable ways to reduce waste across the entire spectrum of care in hospitals. She reviews factors such as plastic waste, pharmaceutical packaging, and overall supply chain waste, which creates over 70% of healthcare emissions. She highlights how healthcare now spends more on “things” rather than “people”. Dr. Wright also touches on climate effects on birth outcomes, healthcare effects of microplastics, and life cycle assessments. Dr. Wright concludes the discussion with actionable ways to reduce waste and emissions and emphasizes that change encourages change.
