Diabetes and obesity are pandemics that are escalating at a rapid stride. Weight gain is a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Over 1/3 of U.S. adults have obesity (defined as BMI >30 kg/m2). Additionally, over 11% of people aged ≥20 years have diabetes. The prevalence may increase to up to 21% by 2050. Our understanding of precise mechanisms linking the two chronic conditions remains unclear.A global pandemic has marked the past two years. The impact is enormous regarding diabetes and obesity with the economic crisis, unemployment, civil unrest, mental health issues, and many other concerns. However, among all the chaos, we have one favorable bright spot: Covid 19 has helped bridge the gap in the system and allowed health care clinicians to rapidly implement and adapt the technology as this thrust of innovation was long overdue. One of the major innovations is implementing telehealth in practice to improve access to diabetes care while simultaneously supporting physical distancing during the pandemic. Today, with greater availability of technology but lack of training in the area, will clinicians frequently get overburdened? Will this cause dissatisfaction, or can this help restore the joy at work?Given the insufficient workforce in both primary care and endocrinology, it is imperative to invest some time in understanding how we can use available technologies and optimally integrate them into the clinic workflow.
