Building Better Biology with
SynBio and Machine Learning
The Best Model of a Cat is Several Cats
Please register no later than 10:00AM the day of the event.
Happy New Year and greetings to our MTF community. While we’ve missed seeing you on-site, we hope that you and your loved ones continue to be safe and well. Please know that we appreciate your support over the years, and look forward to seeing you again. Thanks to those of you who have joined our recent MTF events via our “new” Zoom format.
About the Seminar:
Machine Learning (ML) in conjunction with synthetic biology allows for efficient biological engineering using the same approach as Google’s use of ML to optimize search, and Autodesk’s to design buildings. Real world examples will be used to illustrate how we use statistical and synbio tools to build better genes, proteins, vectors, and cell lines to cure COVID, make better cheese, and break down toxic chemicals.
About the Speaker:
As ATUM’s Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer, Dr. Claes Gustafsson’s scientific expertise is focused on translation, machine learning, and protein engineering with the aim of building an industrial scale integrated platform that allows for the mapping of sequence-function relationships in biology. ATUM is a bioengineering company based in Newark CA. Prior to co-founding ATUM in 2003, Dr. Gustafsson led the Bioinformatics team for protein engineering at Maxygen (1998-2003), and was a Scientist at an early synthetic biology company, Kosan (1995-1998). Before joining industry, he held positions at UC Santa Cruz and UC San Francisco. Dr Gustafsson received his Ph.D. in 1992 from the University of Umeå, Sweden. Dr. Gustafsson holds 45 issued U.S. patents and has published ~50 scientific papers.

MedTech Frontiers is a continuing series of free events for medical device and life science investors, entrepreneurs, clinicians, and technologists. We have hosted over 100 talks to foster innovation, community, and learn about emerging technologies beyond our labs. Please join us for learning, conversation, networking, and presentations by Silicon Valley luminaries held on the first Thursday of each month. Events are free, but registration is requested for planning purposes.
