The Evanostics story – A step towards saving lives from drug overdose

Event Description:
Evanostics is committed to saving lives by enabling accurate and fast diagnosis in near-patient settings. The vision is to create a “thermometer” for oral fluid-based testing that anyone in a clinic or pharmacy could use with minimal training and produce lab-quality results. The first product focuses on testing needed to battle the raging opioid crisis made worse by the Covid19 pandemic. More than 268 people are dying every day. Pain management and behavioral health management clinicians urgently need a reliable and fast system usable in their clinics and get results for the presence of over ten drug classes within fifteen minutes. In the absence of a test, the quality of care suffers, and the number of lab-send outs increase – costing time and money. Evanostics test system comprises of a small benchtop analyzer and a single-use cartridge with an oral fluid collection. The first pilot testing in a pain management clinic resulted in 95%+ sensitivity and specificity and a happy doctor and patients. The talk will begin by introducing the problem, move to the product– its design, architecture, and performance – with some insight into the multidisciplinary challenges and how we overcame them. The talk will also explore the product architecture and function. It will elucidate how various disciplines – immunochemistry, photonics, semiconductor fabrication, microfluidics, electronics, software, and mechanical design – combine to create an end-to-end solution for the unmet need.
