Event Information

Event Topic:
Identifying pathogens 100x faster using Dynamic Bio-Affinity Patterning Technology

Event Description:
Because pathogen ID is so slow, doctors give broad spectrum antibiotics empirically when a blood infection is suspected. Unfortunately, 40% of these antibiotics are not effective. Also, many times broad spectrum antibiotics given without pathogen ID are withdrawn after one cycle of treatment because the cause of the illness was found to be something other than infection (Dr. Blomkalns, Stanford, per. comm.). This practice can lead to increased antibiotic resistance. Bio-Affinity Sciences’ mission is to identify pathogens in less than 10 minutes so that doctors will always know the pathogen ID before prescribing antibiotics. The key differentiators of our technology are that it is cell affinity based, low cost, and ultra-fast. For Dynamic Bio-Affinity Patterning, pathogens will be run through microchannels comprising a surface-grafted scaffold of reactive polymer onto which affinity molecules (sugars, aptamers, vancomycin, and methicillin) have been bio-conjugated. The polymer has many reactive groups for ligands such that the capacity of the channel is very high and binding polyvalent. This allows low numbers of microbes to be quickly identified. The unknown pathogen’s pattern of binding to the channels is recorded, and this pattern is compared to a library of known pathogens. When a match is made, the identity of the pathogen is reported.

Kevin Hacker, Ph.D., is the CEO and Co-founder of Bio-Affinity Sciences. He is from the lab of Bruce Alberts, UCSF, who is known as the father of affinity chromatography, which has similarities to Dynamic Bio-Affinity Patterning Technology. Used affinity chromatography to characterize the T4 Dda helicase. Managed products containing the Dynal magnetic bead with anti-pathogen antibodies for capturing specific bacteria at Life Technologies. Co-inventor of a polyvalent synthetic affinity bead that recovered bacteria containing type 1 fimbriae.
