Rapid pathogen detection systems have become important tools for monitoring food, pharmaceutical production as well as environmental safety. To address growing quality and safety concerns, Life Technologies is committed to putting more powerful pathogen detection capabilities directly into the laboratories of food processors, pharmaceutical QC departments and public health laboratories.

To provide comprehensive rapid food testing solutions, we have developed the MicroSEQ® pathogen detection system which addresses the main components of pathogen detection systems: sample preparation, detection and data analysis. The detection of pathogens is real-time PCR based, and is integrated with the RapidFinderTM Data Analyses Software, a graphical, easy to use tool, that displays results in a plus/minus format. In addition, we have developed a multiplex) real-time PCR analysis provides simultaneous detection of a number of pathogens that can save time and cost of the tests. These multiplex assays as well as a set of single-target detection assays are designed in lyophilized configuration and can be run in fast cycling format.

Detection of low levels of pathogenic microorganisms in food is often difficult. Food samples create unique challenges with respect to detection by molecular methods due to their varied and often highly PCR inhibitory composition. We developed both low throughput (manual) and high throughput (automated) options for PCR-based pathogen detection from a variety of food matrices. These methods are customizable to address challenges unique to certain food types e.g. dry pet food. The MicroSEQ® pathogen detection method is validated for use with a variety of food matrices for detection of Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria spp and E. coli O157:H7.

To further characterize detected species, isolated samples can be sequenced using our MicroSEQ® bacterial identification system. This system can help manufacturers positively identify and classify even new and previously uncharacterized bacteria and fungi because the system uses PCR-based sequencing methods to amplify and rapidly identify organisms. The sequences are compared to a validated library for positive identification and taxonomic classification. The MicroSEQ® bacterial identification system provides microbial identification capacities for quality control to some of the world’s largest environmental monitoring agencies.
