Life Technologies is a leading supplier of life science technology and related applications. The Applied Markets Group at Life Technologies develops new products and technologies for human identification markets such as; paternity, forensics, and human evolution. In forensic applications, evidence submitted for DNA analysis can be recovered from a variety of biological samples including blood, saliva or semen stains on different substrates, body surface swabs, hair, bones, and finger nail scrapings. Forensic analysts seek technologies to maximize the quality of results obtained and increase the success rate of obtaining a DNA profile from these types of samples. This presentation will discuss various instrumentation and chemistry solutions developed by Life Technologies to improve the efficiency of casework, databasing and other human identification workflows to enable successful analysis of forensic evidence. These technologies are designed to meet the stringent requirements of the global forensic DNA community.

Lori Hennessy is Director of R&D for the Human Identification/Applied Genetics Group at Life Technologies. She leads a group of scientists developing new technologies for human identification applications. Prior to joining her current company Dr. Hennessy received a MS degree in Clinical Nutrition and a Ph.D. from Tufts University. She completed her post-doctoral training in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF. Her first industry position was at Pharmacia Biotech (now known as GE Healthcare) developing instruments and assays for mutation detection and high resolution fragment analysis. Since joining Life Technologies in 2000, her group has produced several products that have increased the efficiency and success rates of customers utilizing the technologies to generate a DNA profile from human biological samples.
